Naomi Osaka aims to book her place in the Cincinnati Open main draw when she faces Ashlyn Krueger in the qualifiers on Monday.

The four-time major winner has bittersweet memories of the WTA 1000 event.

She reached the final here four years ago, but the most untimely of hamstring injuries forced her to withdraw on the eve of her clash with Victoria Azarenka.

Osaka is one win away from a return to the main draw, having battled past Anna Blinkova in the opening qualifying round.

Meanwhile, Krueger is seeking her first main-draw appearance in Cincinnati.

The American, who is ranked 82nd in the WTA, is fresh from a resounding 6-2, 6-0 rout of Moyuka Uchijima.

The match gets under way at around 6pm BST on Monday and will be contested over the best of three sets on Center Court.

A quarter-finalist in Doha and ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Osaka also came agonisingly close to stunning world number one Iga Swiatek at the French Open in May.

However, victory over Blinkova was only the second in her last six matches, while she was beaten by Angelique Kerber in the opening round at the Paris Olympics.

That will encourage Krueger, who is fresh from back-to-back last-16 appearances in Nottingham and Eastbourne.

She was also a quarter-finalist at the WTA 125 Catalonia Open, but Osaka’s determination to return to the higher echelons of the WTA as soon as possible may prove the difference in this contest.
