Tommy Paul locks horns with Nicolas Jarry on Friday as both players vie for a place in this year’s Italian Open final.
The two men find themselves in unfamiliar territory in Rome. This is Jarry’s maiden ATP Masters semi-final appearance, and Paul’s first on clay.
Between them, they have eliminated four of top seven seeds this fortnight in Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Hubert Hurkacz.
Birthday boy Paul, who turns 27 on Friday, took care of Medvedev and Hurkacz as he scored back-to-back top-10 wins for the first time in his career, while chalking up his 150th tour-level victory.
Now appearing in his fourth semi-final of the season, the Dallas champion and Delray Beach runner-up will aim to become the first American finalist in the Italian capital since Andre Agassi in 2002.
Standing in his way is a man fresh from claiming a third top-10 win of the campaign in defeating Monte-Carlo champion Tsitsipas less than 24 hours ago.
Joining compatriot Alejandro Tabilo in the semi-finals, Jarry has already helped create history with two Chileans appearing in the last four of an ATP event for the first time since 2006 in Vina del Mar, when Fernando Gonzalez and Nicolas Massu flew the flag.
The match gets under way at around 7.30pm BST (8.30pm local time) on Friday and will be contested over the best of three sets on Center Court.

It has been an inspired run to the semi-finals by Jarry, who had not won a match in his two previous main-draw appearances at the Italian Open.
The Chilean is now gearing up for his second appearance in the last four this term, having been a runner-up in Buenos Aires.
Although, it is his first time at this stage of an ATP Masters event – something his opponent has previous experience of this season at Indian Wells.
That may prove a factor in what we can expect to be a generally tightly fought battle.

This will be only the second meeting between the players on the ATP Tour.
Jarry came out on top in the sole previous encounter, which was also on clay, coming from behind to prevail in four sets in the second round of last year’s French Open.
