Carlos Alcaraz looks to match his best performance at the Australian Open when he faces Lorenzo Sonego in the second round on Thursday.

The world number two is eager to make up for lost time in Melbourne, having missed out on the season’s opening slam 12 months ago through injury.

This will only be the reigning Wimbledon champion’s third appearance at the event, where he is looking to progress beyond round three for the first time.

Despite a tough opening set, Alcaraz eventually prevailed a commanding 7-6(5), 6-1, 6-2 winner over veteran Richard Gasquet in the opening round, and will hope to continue in that vein against Sonego.

The Italian is also aiming to reach the last 16 in Melbourne for the first time, and has momentum after recovering from losing the opening set to beat Dan Evans in round one.

The match gets under way from around 2.30am GMT (1.30pm local time) in the Margaret Court Arena, with either Shang Juncheng or Sumit Nagal awaiting the winner in the third round.

Carlos Alcaraz v Lorenzo Sonego prediction

Alcaraz has reached at least the fourth round in each of the last six Slams he has played. Therefore, it is difficult to see him slipping up here.

World number 43 Sonego knows what it takes to claim a scalp on the big stage, having beaten Andrey Rublev in last year’s French Open.

Nevertheless, you would fully expect the Spaniard to come through this tie without too many problems.
