Carlos Alcaraz commences his 2024 Australian Open campaign with a clash against veteran Richard Gasquet on Tuesday.

Second seed Alcaraz is making only his third appearance in the Australian Open, having withdrawn from last year’s staging due to a foot injury.

The 20-year-old, who claimed Wimbledon glory in 2023, is out to improve on a below-par record in this particular grand slam and start the new calendar year in style with a statement performance against a stalwart of the sport.

The match gets under way from around 9.30am GMT (8.30pm local time) in the Rod Laver Arena, with either Great Britain’s Dan Evans or Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego awaiting the winner in the Second Round.

Seventeen years separate these two players and that age gap should show, with Alcaraz likely to dominate the rally and put the Frenchman through his paces.

Gasquet suffered First Round exits in all four slams last season and that unwanted run looks set to be extended here, with the box office Spaniard well-fancied to prevail in straight sets.
