Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev will battle it out for a place in the 2024 Australian Open final on Friday.

The pair are no stranger to one another in high-profile competition and will lock horns for the right to remain in contention for the first major silverware of the year.

Medvedev has come agonisingly close to lifting this trophy on two occasions, losing out to Novak Djokovic in the 2021 final and Rafael Nadal in the 2022 final.

The number six seed came from a set down to defeat Dominik Koepfer in four, before recovering from 2-1 down to deny Slovak qualifier Lukáš Klein in a fifth set tie break.

He then brushed aside Alex Michelsen in straight sets before holding firm in another fifth set tie break to end the hopes of Cameron Norrie and went on to dump out Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz in four sets in the Quarter-Finals.

The match gets under way from around 8.30am GMT (7.30pm local time) in the Rod Laver Arena, with either defending champion Novak Djokovic or Jannik Sinner awaiting the winner in Sunday’s final.

This looks to have all the hallmarks of a close-run classic as the box office pair meet in a best of five set fixture for the first time.

A fascinating clash of styles sees the defensive and methodical Medvedev come up against the attacking and aggressive Zverev, though both are renowned for their blistering backhands.

It’s difficult to envisage either of these hard court specialists running away with this one, so the most obvious bet looks to be ‘over’ on the total games market at a line of 40.5.

The duo have locked horns on 18 occasions dating back to 2016, with Medvedev boasting the upper-hand of 11 wins to Zverev’s seven.

Incredibly, though, this marks their first meeting in a grand slam.

Medvedev dominated this fixture in 2023, winning five of their six encounters, including the Semi-Finals in Beijing and the Round of 16 at Indian Wells.
