Emma Raducanu marks her return to grand slam action with a showdown against Shelby Rogers at the Australian Open on Tuesday.

Raducanu has been out of grand slam action for the past 12 months following wrist and ankle surgeries and is looking to get her career back on track after so far failing to back up her sensational success at the 2021 US Open.

The Brit shot to fame by winning the US Open as a qualifier in only her second major main draw appearance at the age of 18.

Since then, she has failed to surpass the Second Round stage in five subsequent grand slam campaigns and her lengthy absence from the WTA tour has seen her tumble to 296th in the world rankings.

Her opening opponent in Melbourne comes in the shape of two-time major quarter-finalist Rogers – who she notably defeated on the way to winning the US Open.

Rogers, 31, lost out to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets here last year and has dropped to 161st in the world rankings.

The match gets under way from around 5.30am GMT (4.30pm local time) on Court Two, with either Wang Yafan or Sorana Cîrstea awaiting the winner in the Second Round.

Early signs were encouraging for Raducanu upon her competitive return in Auckland earlier this month, defeating Elena-Gabriela Ruse before going down in a deciding set to Elina Svitolina in the Second Round.

However, question marks remain over her fitness levels coming into the Australian Open after playing on consecutive days in Auckland and pulling out of two exhibition matches in what her team called ‘precautionary measures.’

Rogers is likely to offer up a stern examination for the youngster and this looks to be a closely-matched tie on paper, despite the bookmakers strongly favouring Raducanu.
