Jannik Sinner v Daniil Medvedev | Australian Open 2024 final preview, betting tips and H2H
Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev face off for the right to become the latest new name on the Australian Open men’s singles trophy on Sunday.
Destiny beckons for Sinner and Medvedev as they bid to become the first new champion in Melbourne since Stan Wawrinka in 2014 in what will be the first Australian Open final since 2005 not to feature any of the ‘Big Three’.
The duo will clash in a grand slam for the first time after producing a host of heroic performances to reach the first major final of 2024.
Their respective journeys to reach the final could not be more contrasting, with Sinner having contested just 19 sets to Medvedev’s 25 en route.
Sinner has blitzed through to his first major final for the loss of just one set, with that coming against reigning champion Novak Djokovic as he sensationally ended the Serb’s 33-match winning streak in this competition.
The Italian star has now won 27 of his last 30 matches since last year’s US Open, and the 22-year-old has become the youngest men’s finalist here since Djokovic in 2008.
Medvedev is looking to make it third time lucky, having come agonisingly close to lifting this trophy in 2021 and 2022 when he lost in the final to Djokovic and Rafael Nadal respectively.
The number three seed, whose maiden major success came at the 2021 US Open, has fought hard to reach his sixth grand slam final, battling through a trio of last-set deciders, including in the Quarter-Finals against Hubert Hurkacz and from two sets down to deny Alexander Zverev in an epic Semi-Final.
The final gets under way from 8.30am GMT (7.30pm local time) in the Rod Laver Arena.
Jannik Sinner v Daniil Medvedev prediction
This will be the first best-of-five set clash between the pair, with five of their nine previous nine meetings having gone to a third set decider.
Big-serving Sinner comes into the final on the back of his most notable career win over Djokovic, and any repeat of that blistering display could spell danger for Daniil.
Sinner is without doubt the most in-form player of the two and has the recent upper-hand in the head-to-heads with three wins in a row.
While Medvedev is certain to dig deep and scrap for every point, we’re siding with Sinner to prevail in either four or five sets and become the first Italian winner of a grand slam in more than four decades.
