Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev battle it out for glory in a blockbuster 2024 French Open final at Roland Garros on Sunday.

A new men’s singles champion will be crowned at the season’s clay-court major for the first time since 2016, when Novak Djokovic claimed the first of his three titles with victory over Andy Murray.

While Alcaraz is looking to complete a hat-trick of grand slam titles, Zverev is seeking his major breakthrough on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

The winner of the 2022 US Open and last year’s Wimbledon, 21-year-old Alcaraz is the youngest man to reach major finals on all three surfaces.

The Spaniard was struggling for fitness when he arrived at Roland Garros a fortnight ago, with a right forearm injury hampering his preparations for the tournament.

However, the third seed has gone from strength to strength, dropping just a single set on his way to a second successive semi-final, where he twice came from a set down to beat new world number one Jannik Sinner.

Zverev has also had to dig deep to reach his second major final, while he is only the second German man after Michael Stich in 1996 to progress to the championship match here during the Open Era.

The fourth seed, who opened with victory over 14-time champion Rafael Nadal, was a double-break down in the fifth set against Tallon Griekspoor in round three, and was also a set behind Holger Rune and Casper Ruud in the fourth round and semi-finals respectively.

Italian Open champion Zverev has spent 19 hours and 27 minutes on court – the most time by a player on the way to a Roland Garros final since it was first recorded in 1991 – while stretching his ongoing winning streak to 12 matches.

The match gets under way at around 1.30pm BST (2.30pm local time) on Sunday and will be contested over the best of five sets on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Carlos Alcaraz v Alexander Zverev prediction

This final between the third and fourth seed has all the potential to be an absolute classic.

Without trying to sit on the fence, it really could go either way and right to the wire.

Alcaraz is 2-0 in major finals, and that previous experience and knowhow will definitely serve him well in his quest to join Nadal as one of only two men to win this title before turning 22.

Meanwhile, Zverev is looking to right the wrongs of the 2020 US Open final, when he surrendered a two-set lead against Dominic Thiem.

The 27-year-old is aiming to become the first German man of the Open Era to lift the trophy – and the third to win a major after Stich and Boris Becker.

He has demonstrated his credentials when the chips are down at Roland Garros, boasting an impressive 10-1 record in fifth sets.

Similarly, though, Alcaraz 10-1 in fifth sets at slams overall, so you really will do well to pick a winner from this epic final.
