Alexander Zverev locks horns with Holger Rune in a mouth-watering fourth-round showdown at the French Open on Monday.

The fourth and 13th seeds go head to head on Court Philippe-Chatrier to complete the quarter-final line-up at Roland Garros, where Alex de Minaur awaits the winner.

Both players have proven track records at the clay-court major. Zverev is only player to reach the semi-finals in each of the last three editions, while Rune has enjoyed runs to the quarter-finals in each of his first two appearances.

Italian Open champion Zverev is building momentum at an ideal time. Though forced to come through a fifth-set tie-break against Tallon Griekspoor in round three, he has now won nine consecutive ATP matches on clay for the first time since a run of 13 six years ago.

And among players born in 1990 or after, the German boasts the most match wins in the men’s singles at Roland Garros with 31.

Rune has also come through a fifth-set tie-break this fortnight, overturning a 5-0 deficit to scrape past Flavio Cobolli in round two.

The boys’ singles champion five years ago, Casper Ruud is the only man to beat the Dane in the men’s singles tournament here.

With Ruud joining Rune, this marks only the second time in the Open Era that two Scandinavians have reached three successive French Open fourth rounds – after Mats Wilander and Henrik Sundstrom’s consecutive runs from 1983 to 1985.

And the 21-year-old is now looking to become only the ninth player in the Open Era to reach three Roland Garros quarter-finals before turning 22.

The match gets under way at 7.15pm BST (8.15pm local time) on Monday and will be contested over the best of five sets on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Alexander Zverev v Holger Rune prediction

We know it’s a cliché, but this is genuinely a tough one to call – given their proven credentials on clay.

Zverev is targeting his fourth consecutive quarter-final at Roland Garros, and would become only the sixth player this century to reach the last eight on six occasions.

As for Rune, can he become only the third Scandinavian – after Wilander and Bjorn Borg – to progress to three successive French Open quarter-finals before turning 22?

There is plenty at stake for both players, so do not be surprised to see this contest go right to the wire.

Alexander Zverev v Holger Rune head-to-head

This will only be the second meeting between the players on the ATP Tour. Rune prevailed in their only previous encounter two years ago in Munich, where he went on to win the tournament. The Dane will hope that serves as a positive omen in Paris.
