A battle of the three-time grand slam champions provides one of the more interesting first-round match-ups in the French capital.

Both players boast fond memories of the season’s second major. Wawrinka lifted the trophy in 2015 and was runner-up to Rafael Nadal two years later, sandwiching Murray’s run to the 2016 showpiece.

The pair contested consecutive French Open semi-finals in 2016 and 2017, the Briton prevailing in four sets before the Swiss exacted his revenge in a five-set thriller 12 months later.

They also went head to head in Murray’s most recent appearance at Roland Garros four years ago, though the two-time Wimbledon champion was powerless as his opponent ran out a commanding straight-sets winner.

Neither player has particularly flourished so far this season, an ankle injury affecting the former world number one’s momentum. Both opted to step up their preparations by entering a Challenger Tour event in Bordeaux last time out, and will hope their approach is vindicated here.

A potential all-British second-round clash could be on the cards, with the winner of this match due to face either Cameron Norrie or Pavel Kotov.
