Reigning champion Iga Swiatek and first-time major finalist Jasmine Paolini go head to head on Saturday for the right to be crowned the 2024 French Open champion.

It promises to be an intriguing showdown on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Swiatek is aiming to become the fourth woman in the Open Era to win four Roland Garros titles – after Chris Evert (seven), Steffi Graf (six) and Justine Henin (four) – while Paolini aims to become the first Italian winner here since Francesca Schiavone in 2010.

Having already triumphed in Madrid and Rome, top seed Swiatek is also looking to complete the Triple Crown on clay, which was last achieved by Serena Williams 11 years ago.

The Pole survived match point against Naomi Osaka in the second round, but has certainly made the most of her let-off.

Anastasia Potapova was ruthlessly double-bagelled in just 40 minutes, while Marketa Vondrousova and Coco Gauff were also swept aside on the way to her third successive final.

Matching Evert for reaching 34 main-draw wins in the fewest matches (36) at Roland Garros, she could now become the first player born after 1990 to land five major titles.

Paolini will have something to say about that, as she looks to crown a fairy-tale fortnight with a remarkable victory.

The 28-year-old had never previously progressed beyond the second round here, but she has rewritten history with an inspired run to her maiden grand slam final.

Winning six matches in a single tournament for the first time in her career, Bianca Andreescu and Elena Rybakina have been taken out along the way, along with teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva (6-3, 6-1) in the semi-finals.

Set to climb into the world’s top 10 for the first time, Paolini is the first Italian woman to reach a major final since Flavia Pennetta and Roberta Vinci contested the 2015 US Open showpiece.

She is also set to contest the women’s doubles final on Sunday alongside Sara Errani who, incidentally, was the last Italian female to contest the singles’ championship match here 12 years ago.

The match gets under way at 2pm BST (3pm local time) on Saturday and will be contested over the best of three sets on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Iga Swiatek v Jasmine Paolini prediction

It seems ages ago that Swiatek looked like she may suffer a shock early exit, when Osaka held match point in round two.

However, the Pole has not looked back since surviving that scare, winning 52 of her next 66 games.

It is also worth noting in those victories over Vondrousova and Gauff – both top-five seeds and reigning major champions – she dropped only eight games.

Not only that, but it is now nearly two years since she was beaten by a player ranked outside the world’s top 10 on clay.

Paolini will certainly relish the occasion and try to leave everything out on Chatrier, but it is hard to see any other outcome than a relatively straightforward Swiatek victory.
