Novak Djokovic is aiming to create more history when he faces Francisco Cerundolo in the French Open fourth round on Monday.
Victory for Djokovic in this match would see him surpass Roger Federer with a record-breaking 370th win in a men’s singles grand slam match during the Open Era.
The Serb will certainly be hoping for a much smoother contest on Court Philippe-Chatrier, following his five-set thriller against Lorenzo Musetti that finished after 3am local time on Saturday night.
That created more history for the 24-time major winner. Indeed, it was his record-breaking 36th fifth-set victory in a slam – and 10th at Roland Garros, where only Gael Monfils and Stan Wawrinka have claimed more such successes in the Open Era (11 each).
Standing in his way is a player appearing in round four at the French Open for the second year running.
Fresh from reaching the semi-finals in Rio and Madrid Open quarter-finals on clay, Cerundolo has dropped just a single set and beat 14th seed Tommy Paul in only his 10th major main draw,
Cerundolo is now targeting his first quarter-final, while becoming only the third active Argentine male to do so after Diego Schwartzman and Tomas Etcheverry.
The 23rd seed is also seeking Argentina’s first major win over a world number one since Juan Martin del Potro defeated Rafael Nadal in the 2018 US Open semi-finals, while Guillermo Canas was the last to do so at Roland Garros – against Lleyton Hewitt 22 years ago.
The match gets under way at around 3pm BST (4pm local time) and will be contested over the best of five sets on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
Novak Djokovic v Francisco Cerundolo prediction
Cerundolo may be encouraged by the fact Djokovic is likely to still be feeling the effects of his gruelling late-night match against Musetti.
However, the Serb has won all 17 of his previous fourth-round matches at the French Open, where he is eyeing an 18th quarter-final.
Djokovic is also 48-4 against Argentine opponents since the start of the 2008 season, with Del Petro inflicting all four defeats.
Not only that, but Cerundolo is still seeking his first win over a world number one, so you would fully expect the top seed to come through.
