Jannik Sinner goes head to head with Carlos Alcaraz in a blockbuster French Open semi-final at Roland Garros on Friday.
The second and third seeds – and highest remaining in the season’s clay-court major – collide in what promises to be a mouth-watering battle on Court Philippe-Chatrier,
It will also be the first men’s singles semi-final at Roland Garros between two players under the age of 23 since Novak Djokovic faced Rafael Nadal 16 years ago.
Sinner is full of confidence and momentum after becoming the new world number one, following Djokovic’s withdrawal with a knee injury.
Nevertheless, the reigning Australian Open champion is fully deserving of his new title – the first Italian male to hold it since the rankings were first published in 1973.
Sinner has dropped just a single set to reach his third grand slam semi-final, all of which have come on different surfaces.
Remaining perfect in his 12 major matches this year, the 22-year-old is the second player in the last 15 years after Stefanos Tsitsipas to the reach semi-finals at Melbourne Park and Roland Garros in the same season before turning 23.
Alcaraz has also dropped just a single set to reach the last four here for the second year running – and fifth time overall in a major.
More impressively, the Spaniard has reeled off nine sets without reply against three seeded opponents – most recently against Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals.
Maintaining his perfect record over the Greek – winning their sixth straight meeting – Alcaraz also notched his 50th men’s singles win at a major in 60 such matches – with only Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe (both 59) taking fewer to reach the half-century among players who started their career in the Open Era.
The match gets under way at around 1.30pm BST (2.30pm local time) on Friday and will be contested over the best of five sets on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
Jannik Sinner v Carlos Alcaraz prediction
Certainly a match worthy of a final, it should be an absolute belter on Chatrier.
We have Sinner buoyant from reaching the summit of the men’s game, and Alcaraz only getting stronger and stronger after his recent injury struggles.
The Italian has won each of his first four major matches against top-10 opponents this season, becoming the youngest player to achieve the feat since Jim Courier in 1992.
That experience of beating the best on the biggest stages so frequently and so recently may just give him the edge in a contest likely to go right to the wire.
