Iga Swiatek locks horns with Coco Gauff yet again at Roland Garros, with a place in the 2024 French Open final up for grabs.

The pair face off for the third successive year on Court Philippe-Chatrier and, after Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina crashed out in the last eight, whoever prevails here will be confident of lifting Coupe Suzanne-Lenglen.

Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova are the only other duet to clash in three or more successive years in the women’s singles quarter-finals onwards at the French Open – doing so between 1984 and 1987.

Swiatek has come out on top in both previous encounters – in the 2022 final and 2023 quarter-finals – and has her sights set on becoming only the fourth women in the Open Era to win four titles in Paris.

Despite surviving match point against Naomi Osaka in round two, the Pole has not looked back and taken her win tally from her opening 35 French Open matches to 33 – a total only bettered in the same span by Evert (34) during the Open Era.

Gauff also knows what it takes to produce the goods at Roland Garros, mind.

After coming from behind to beat Ons Jabeur in the quarter-finals, she now has 20 main-draw victories here to her name, with only Swiatek (21) registering more before turning 21.

At 20, the reigning US Open champion is the youngest player to reach three or more successive women’s singles semi-finals at grand slams since Maria Sharapova (four between 2006 and 2007).

The match gets under way at 2pm BST (3pm local time) on Thursday and will be contested over the best of three sets on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Iga Swiatek v Coco Gauff prediction

Swiatek is aiming to become the first player born after 1990 to win five grand slam titles, and she is certainly in the blistering form required to do so – winning her last 17 matches.

After demolishing Anastasia Potapova 6-0, 6-0 in just 40 minutes, she inflicted another 6-0, 6-2 rout on fifth seed and reigning Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova.

The only player to previously drop just two games in the last 16 and quarter-finals of a single major during the Open Era was Navratilova back at the 1989 US Open.

Then, there is the head-to-head record. The Pole has won 11 of her 12 previous meetings with Gauff, dropping just two sets along the way.

The most recent of those was just three weeks ago at this stage of the Italian Open, and it is hard to see any other outcome than another victory for her here.
