Alexander Zverev resumes his US Open campaign on Wednesday when he plays Alexandre Muller in the second round at Flushing Meadows.

The world number four, who is aiming to continue his impressive recent form of the ATP Tour, opened with a four-set victory over compatriot Maximilian Marterer on Monday.

A champion in Rome, he was also a finalist at Roland Garros and Hamburg, and has reached at least the quarter-finals in each of his three most recent events.

That included a semi-final appearance in Cincinnati last time out, and he would love to go the extra couple of steps this fortnight and finally get his hands on that elusive major title.

Next up is a man fresh from achieving his first victory at the season’s final slam in Muller.

The Frenchman recovered from losing the opening set against Adam Walton to prevail in four, and now bids to reach the third round at a major for the first time.

An Argentine opponent in Francisco Cerundolo or Tomas Etcheverry awaits the winner of this match in the US Open third round.

The match gets under way at around 6pm BST (1pm local time) on Wednesday and will be contested over the best of five sets at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Zverev is a player who knows what it takes to go deep at the US Open, where he has reached at least the quarter-finals in his last three appearances.

The 2020 runner-up will want to conserve as much energy as possible in his bid to do so again this year, so will want to progress from this match without too many difficulties.

The German is an overwhelming favourite to do that against the world number 77, whose better exploits this season have come on the Challenger Tour with victory in San Marino and a run to the Lyon showpiece.
