Alexander Zverev begins his latest quest for a first major title against compatriot Maximilian Marterer in the opening round at the US Open.

World number four Zverev has been one of the form players on the ATP Tour this season.

A champion in Rome, he was also a finalist at Roland Garros and Hamburg, and has reached at least the quarter-finals in each of his three most recent events.

After reaching the last eight at the Olympics and Montreal, Zverev went one better in Cincinnati before running into world number one Jannik Sinner.

The first obstacle he must overcome at Flushing Meadows is fellow German Marterer.

Despite defeat by Mitchell Krueger in qualifying, the world number 100 will make his fifth main-draw appearance at the season’s final major, and will hope this is the year he registers his first victory.

A second-round showdown with either Alexandre Muller or Adam Walton awaits the winner of this clash.

The match gets under way at around 4pm BST (11am local time) on Monday and will be contested over the best of five sets on Grandstand.

Zverev is certainly a man with pedigree when it comes to the US Open.

Runner-up in 2020, he was a semi-finalist the following year and quarter-finalist 12 months ago.

Therefore, Zverev will fancy his chances of progressing without too many difficulties against Marterer, who has won just three of the 16 main-draw matches he has played on the ATP Tour this year.
