Aryna Sabalenka goes head to head with Emma Navarro in a mouth-watering US Open semi-final showdown at Flushing Meadows on Thursday.

The first of the women’s last-four clashes in Arthur Ashe Stadium pits the reigning Australian Open champion and world number two against the home favourite and first-time major semi-finalist.

The highest remaining seed after Iga Swiatek’s quarter-final exit, Sabalenka will fancy her chances of going the extra step after narrowly missing out on the title to Coco Gauff 12 months ago.

Other than coming from behind against Ekaterina Alexandrova, the second seed has not dropped a set while defeating the likes of Lucia Bronzetti, Elise Mertens and Olympic gold medallist Qinwen Zheng.

Meanwhile, Navarro reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals a few weeks back, and has continued on that trajectory in the Big Apple.

Having never previously won a match at her home major, she has taken out Marta Kostyuk and a resurgent Paula Badosa, while dethroning Gauff in the fourth round.

The winner will play either Jessica Pegula or Karolina Muchova in this year’s US Open final.

The match gets under way at around 9.30pm BST (4.30pm local time) on Thursday and will be contested over the best of three sets in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Navarro, who also reached the National Bank Open semi-finals last month, certainly has momentum heading into her first semi-final at a slam.

Although, her opponent has been there and done it many times before.

Indeed, this is Sabalenka’s ninth major semi-final, and fourth on the bounce in New York.

Navarro will be urged on by her home crowd, but that previous experience and knowhow of this level may just give the world number two the edge.
