Carlos Alcaraz resumes his US Open title bid against Botic van de Zandschlup in the second round at Flushing Meadows on Thursday.

The Spaniard is looking to land his third major crown of the season, following his triumphs at the French Open and Wimbledon.

Although his preparations were briefly affected by an ankle concern, he opened with a relatively comfortably four-set win over debutant Li Tu.

Alcaraz, who won this event in 2022, now looks to reach round three at a 12th successive slam.

His opponent is fresh from an impressive straight-sets victory over former Wimbledon semi-finalist Denis Shapovalov in the opening round.

Van de Zandschlup also fond memories of Flushing Meadows, where he reached the quarter-finals on debut three years ago.

A showdown with either Jack Draper or Facundo Diaz Acosta awaits the winner of this clash in the third round.

The match gets under way at around 2pm BST (9pm local time) on Thursday and will be contested over the best of five sets in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Alcaraz will be feeling confident in his chances of clinching his fourth silverware of 2024.

The Spaniard has reached at least the quarter-finals in all three of his previous Flushing Meadow appearances, though he will not be looking too far ahead just yet.

By contrast, Van de Zandschlup has suffered seven first-round exits this year, while you must go back to Wimbledon in 2022 for the last time he reached round three at a slam.

With all that in mind, it is difficult to see beyond a commanding Alcaraz win.
