Casper Ruud goes head to head with a resurgent Gael Monfils on Wednesday for a place in the US Open third round at Flushing Meadows.

Ruud is a former runner-up at the season’s final major, having narrowly missed out on the title to Carlos Alcaraz two years ago.

The Norwegian had enjoyed a generally successful 2024 – winning in Barcelona and Geneva while reaching a further three finals – until his momentum was halted recently by a stomach bug and bout of flu.

Nevertheless, Ruud looked back to his best during a comfortable straight-sets victory over Bu Yunchaokete in the opening round.

Meanwhile, Monfils also knows what it takes to go deep in New York, having reached the semi-finals eight years ago, plus a further three quarter-finals.

The Frenchman, who has returned to the world’s top 50 following runs to the semi-finals in Doha and Mallorca, recovered from losing the opening set to see off Diego Schwartzman in round one.

A third-round showdown with either Roberto Carballes Baena or Juncheng Shang awaits the winner of this clash.

The match gets under way at around 10pm BST (5pm local time) on Wednesday and will be contested over the best of five sets on Grandstand.

This is genuinely a difficult one to call. The ATP rankings make Ruud an odds-on favourite, but the form book may suggest otherwise.

Aside from his run to the 2022 showpiece, the Norwegian has only progressed beyond the US Open second round once in his five other appearances.

That is something Monfils will look to capitalise upon. The Frenchman will certainly fancy his chances; after all, he is fresh from claiming the scalp of Carlos Alcaraz in Cincinnati earlier this month.
