Coco Gauff puts her US Open title defence on the line again when she faces Elina Svitolina in a tasty third-round clash on Friday.

Arthur Ashe Stadium will be treated to a cracking match between the reigning champion and three-time major semi-finalist.

Gauff extended her winning streak at Flushing Meadows to nine matches following her second-round victory over veteran Tatjana Maria, who was beaten 6-4, 6-0.

It was the 20-year-old’s second straight-sets win in a row, having put Varvara Gracheva to the sword 6-2, 6-0, while she already has two bagels under her belt.

Svitolina, meanwhile, has endured two contrasting victories to reach round three for the eighth year running in the Big Apple.

The 2019 semi-finalist was forced to come from behind in her opener against Maria Lourdes Carle, but then ran out a commanding 6-1, 6-2 victor over compatriot Anhelina Kalinina.

A meeting with either Emma Navarro or Marta Kostyuk awaits the winner of this contest in the US Open fourth round.

The match gets under way at around 5pm BST (12pm local time) on Friday and will be contested over the best of three sets at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

This could be a blockbuster, though it has the potential to be a banana skin for Gauff.

Svitolina knows how to take out the biggest names on the biggest stages, notably beating world number one Iga Swiatek in last year’s Wimbledon quarter-finals.

Although, the Ukrainian has only progressed beyond the last 16 of three events this season at Auckland (final, losing to Gauff), Wimbledon and Monterrey (both quarter-finals).

By contrast, Gauff has already reached eight quarter-finals, and those increased appearances at the latter stages of tournaments when the pressure intensifies may be enough to see her through here.
