Coco Gauff continues her US Open title defence with a second-round clash against veteran Tatjana Maria at Flushing Meadows on Wednesday.

A runner-up in the WTA 125 in Barranquilla and ITF in Surbiton this season, the world number 99 now looks to reach round three at a slam for only the third time, with one of the other two such runs culminating in her semi-final appearance at Wimbledon in 2022.

A Ukrainian opponent awaits the winner of this match in the US Open third round, in either Elina Svitolina or Anhelina Kalinina.

The match gets under way at around 12am BST (7pm local time) on Wednesday and will be contested over the best of three sets at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Despite reaching the semi-finals of the Australian and French Open, Gauff did not arrive in New York in the greatest of form, having endured earlier exits at Wimbledon, Toronto, Cincinnati and the Olympics.

Nevertheless, the 20-year-old tends to come good on the bigger stages, and she will now look to reach round three for the 12th time in her last 16 majors.

By contrast, Maria is seeking her first third-round appearance in the Big Apple. Therefore, it is hard to see any other outcome prevailing than a commanding Gauff victory.
