Emma Raducanu returns to Flushing Meadows to face Sofia Kenin in the first round of the US Open on Tuesday.

Another eye-catching opening-round tie in the Big Apple provides a battle of the former major winners.

It is almost three years since the then teenage Raducanu sent shockwaves throughout the tennis world with her fairy-tale victory in New York.

Although her title defence fell at the first hurdle the following year, the Briton is back at the season’s final major and in fine fettle, too – with a semi-final and two quarter-finals from her last four events.

Meanwhile, Kenin has claimed victories over the likes of Ons Jabeur and Caroline Garcia this year, though they have proved to be false dawns during a generally disappointing campaign.

She was a quarter-finalist at this event back in 2020 – the year she won the Australian Open and was runner-up to Iga Swiatek at the French Open.

A showdown with either sixth seed Jessica Pegula or Shelby Rogers awaits the winner of this clash in the second round.

The match gets under way at around 11pm BST (6pm local time) on Tuesday and will be contested over the best of three sets on Grandstand.

Raducanu’s decision not to enter the French Open or Olympic Games appear to have paid off, with some decent showings in recent tournaments.

After reaching the Nottingham Open semi-finals, a run to the Wimbledon fourth round was sandwiched by quarter-final appearances in Eastbourne and Washington.

By contrast, Kenin has struggled to generate any momentum this season, in which she is yet to progress beyond the last 16 of any tournament.

Beaten in six of her last seven WTA main-draw matches, the former Australian Open champion has also lost her opening match in 12 different events.
