Coco Gauff continues her US Open charge when she locks horns with Donna Vekic in the second round on Thursday.

The world number three delighted her home crowd two years ago, when she claimed her maiden slam at Flushing Meadows.

However, her quest for a second title almost fell at the very first hurdle for the second major running, with the French Open champion battling past Ajla Tomljanovic in three sets.

Vekic was also taken the distance by Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, before eventually booking her place in the second round.

The Croatian was a quarter-finalist in 2019, and reached round four 12 months ago after three successive first-round exits.

A third-round showdown with either Magdalena Frech or Peyton Stearns awaits whoever prevails from this clash.

Play gets under way at 12am BST on Thursday with the match contested over the best of three sets at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

After bowing out in the first round at Wimbledon, Gauff’s vulnerability was evident again during her opening clash with Tomljanovic.

Nevertheless, she does have momentum from her Roland-Garros success – and runs to the final in Madrid and Rome – to fall back on.

By contrast, Vekic has not progressed beyond the last 16 of any event this season, and that lack of experience at the business end of tournaments may just give Gauff the edge.
