Iga Swiatek locks horns with Jessica Pegula in a mouth-watering US Open quarter-final at Flushing Meadows on Wednesday.

Undoubtedly the pick of the last-eight ties pits the world number one against the home favourite in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Swiatek is targeting her second US Open crown – following her success two years ago – and sixth WTA silverware of another decorated season.

The reigning French Open champion, who has also triumphed at Indian Wells, Madrid, Rome and Doha this year, is yet to drop a set this fortnight, defeating the likes of Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and 16th seed Liudmila Samsonova along the way.

Pegula has also reeled off eight sets without reply, defeating the likes of Sofia Kenin and 18th seed Diana Shnaider in the process.

Back in the US Open quarter-finals – and a recent winner in Toronto and finalist in Cincinnati – she is the fourth player to reach the last eight of all three tournaments in multiple seasons after Serena Williams, Simona Halep and Karolina Pliskova.

A showdown with either Beatriz Haddad Maia or Karolina Muchova awaits the winner of this clash in the semi-finals.

The match gets under way at around 12am BST (7pm local time) on Wednesday and will be contested over the best of three sets in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

This is Swiatek’s ninth such appearance, she has won six of the previous eight. Pegula, on the other hand, has lost on all six previous occasions.

Not only that, the Pole has now won each of her last 12 slam matches against top-20 opponents, becoming only the fourth player in the last four decades to achieve the feat against Serena Williams, Steffi Graf and Monica Seles.

She has also not faced a single break point in each of her last three matches in this event. It all points towards a commanding victory for the top seed.
