Jannik Sinner locks horns with Jack Draper in a mouth-watering first men’s US Open semi-final at Flushing Meadows on Friday.

World number one Sinner is aiming to land his second slam of the season – and sixth silverware overall – while first-time major semi-finalist Draper will hope there are still two more chapters to be written in his fairy-tale run in New York.

After seeing off a trio of American opponents including Tommy Paul, Sinner then saw off 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals to become the first man born in the 1990s or 2000s to reach the semi-finals at all for slams.

The reigning Australian Open champion now looks to become the first Italian man to reach multiple major finals, and first to reach the championship match at Flushing Meadows.

Draper, meanwhile, has been a revelation on the way to becoming the fourth British male semi-finalist in the Big Apple after Greg Rusedski, Tim Henman and 2012 champion Andy Murray.

The 25th seed is only the third player this century to reach his maiden slam semi-final without dropping a set – having defeated the likes of Botic van de Zandschlup, Tomas Machac and 10th seed Alex de Minaur.

Another huge scalp here would see him become the second-lowest ranked US Open men’s finalist after Kevin Anderson (32) in 2017.

Taylor Fritz or Frances Tiafoe awaits the winner of this clash in Sunday’s US Open final.

The match gets under way at around 8pm BST (3pm local time) on Friday and will be contested over the best of five sets in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Sinner is on a nine-match winning streak, and has now notched up a tour-leading 33 hard-court victories in 2024.

At least a quarter-finalist in all 12 events he has played this season, the Italian’s superb consistency is further highlighted by the fact he boasts a 43-1 record against players ranked outside the ATP’s top 10.

That epitomises the task at hand for Draper, who is looking to follow in Emma Raducanu’s footsteps and become Britain’s second singles champion at Flushing Meadows this decade.

Although he recently defeated Carlos Alcaraz at Queen’s Club, that represents his sole victory in five attempts against top-three opponents.

And while you would expect him to give Sinner a run for his money, the world number one may just have too much for him.
