Novak Djokovic renews his US Open rivalry with compatriot Laslo Djere in the second round at Flushing Meadows on Wednesday.
The pair collided in an epic showdown at the season’s final major 12 months ago, with Djokovic forced to recover from two sets down before eventually prevailing.
Those were the only sets he dropped on the way to landing his record-equalling 24th slam, though he will be hoping for no such difficulties this time around.
Djokovic opened his title defence with an 89th match win at Flushing Meadows – equalling Roger Federer’s tally and now only trailing Jimmy Connors (98) – as he comfortably swept aside debutant Radu Albot in straight sets.
That means he has now won 16 of his last 17 matches, with his only defeat coming against Carlos Alcaraz in last month’s Wimbledon showpiece.
It was not quite so straightforward for his compatriot, who was forced to twice come from behind before eventually battling past Jan-Lennard Struff.
Djere, who is making his seventh straight appearance at this event, now looks to match his best performance here from 12 months ago by reaching round three.
Alexei Popyrin or Pedro Martinez awaits the winner of this clash in the US Open third round.
The match gets under way at around 2am BST (9pm local time) on Wednesday and will be contested over the best of five sets in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Novak Djokovic v Laslo Djere prediction
Four-time champion Djokovic has never failed to progress beyond the second round at the US Open.
That stands him in very good stead against a player who has suffered eight first-round exits in 13 ATP tournaments played this season.
With world number 109 Djere’s best performances of the campaign coming courtesy of Challenger Tour semi-final appearances in Prostejov and Santo Domingo – while already having a five-set epic under his belt this fortnight – you would fully expect Djokovic to have too much for him here.
