Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz renew their fascinating rivalry in a blockbuster US Open final at Flushing Meadows on Sunday.

The pair collide in a major showpiece for the third time this season – becoming the first players to do so during the Open Era.

It is also the first time since the rankings were introduced that all four Grand Slam finals have been contested by the world’s top two players.

Alcaraz rescued three match points to inflict a heartbreaking defeat on Sinner in the French Open final in June, though the Italian exacted his revenge at Wimbledon five weeks later.

As well as the trophy, there is an ulterior motive for the two finalists, with the winner securing top spot in the ATP rankings.

Current world number one Sinner is only the fourth player to reach all four major men’s singles finals in a season, after Rod Laver, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

Appearing in his fifth straight Grand Slam final overall, the reigning champion follows Federer, Djokovic and Nadal as the only players to achieve the feat.

He has done so courtesy of victories over Vit Kopriva, Alexei Popyrin, Denis Shapovalvo, Alexander Bublik, Lorenzo Musetti and Felix Auger-Aliassime, with the top seed dropping just two sets along the way.

Alcaraz, meanwhile, has reeled off 18 without reply – beating Reilly Opelka, Mattia Bellucci, Luciano Darderi, Arthur Rinderknech, Jiri Lehecka and Djokovic en route. He is the fourth player to do that since 2000, after Nadal, Federer and Lleyton Hewitt.

The 2022 champion is the youngest player since Bjorn Borg in 1978 to reach major men’s singles finals on all three surfaces in a single season.

It will be Alcaraz’s seventh major final, the 22-year-old reaching that tally slower than only Borg and Nadal during the Open Era.

We are set for another epic showdown between the two best players in the world. For whom will it be third time lucky in major finals this season?

Play gets under way at around 5pm BST on Sunday with the match contested over the best of five sets at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Jannik Sinner v Carlos Alcaraz prediction

Choosing a winner in this final is nigh-on impossible, and it would be very easy to sit on the fence.

Alcaraz has won each of his last 12 matches, while Sinner is on a 27-match winning streak at the hard-court majors.

The Spaniard will be the fresher of the two players, spending less time on court having played two fewer sets than his opponent.

Alcaraz has also lost only two service games across his six matches this fortnight, while facing only nine break points.

Though Sinner prevailed at Wimbledon, it represents his only victory in the last seven meetings between the players.

Taking all of the above into consideration, it may just tilt this contest in favour of Alcaraz.
