Alexander Zverev renews his rivalry with Jacob Fearnley when the pair lock horns in the US Open second round on Thursday.

The two players are set to go head to head for the first time this season, with Zverev a straight-sets winner when they collided at the Australian Open and Miami Open.

The third seed reached the final in Melbourne – also triumphing in Munich this season – but suffered a first-round exit at Wimbledon last month.

Nevertheless, he bounced back from that disappointment with back-to-back semi-final appearances in Toronto and Cincinnati, and the 2020 US Open finalist launched his latest Flushing Meadows campaign with a straight-sets win over Alejandro Tabilo.

Fearnley also enjoyed an impressive first-round victory on his main-draw debut in New York, putting 2019 Wimbledon semi-finalist Roberto Bautista Agut to the sword in four sets.

The world number 60 now looks to make it third time lucky against Zverev, and progress to round three at a major for the third time this year.

A third-round showdown with either Anna Kalinskaya or Yulia Putintseva awaits whoever prevails from this clash.

Play gets under way at 12am BST on Thursday with the match contested over the best of three sets at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Zverev is a heavy favourite to progress here, which is no surprise given his dominance in his other two meetings with Fearnley.

Not only that, but he has reached at least the quarter-finals in each of his last four appearances at Flushing Meadows.

That makes it a tough task for Fearnley, who had arrived in New York off the back of a five-match losing streak on the ATP Tour.

With all that in mind, it is hard to foresee any other outcome than a commanding win for the German.
