Emma Raducanu’s Wimbledon return continues on Wednesday when she plays Elise Mertens in the third round at SW19.

The former US Open champion missed out on last year’s grass-court major due to injury, but skipped the French Open to ensure she was back at the All England Club 12 months on.

At the moment, that decision looks vindicated as she returned with a straight-sets victory over lucky loser Renata Zarazua in round one.

Now, she looks to reach round three at a major for the first time since her fairytale 2021 US Open triumph.

Standing in her way is doubles world number one Mertens, who came from behind to beat Nao Hibino in the opening round.

The Belgian has won three doubles titles alongside Hsieh Su-wei this season, at Australian Open, Indian Wells Open and Rothesay Classic.

A third-round showdown with either Maria Sakkari or Arantxa Rus awaits the winner of this match.

The match gets under way at around 5pm BST on Wednesday and will be contested over the best of three sets on No.1 Court.

Raducanu has enjoyed a solid grass-court season up to now.

After her run to the Rothesay Open semi-finals, she beat fellow former Flushing Meadows champion Sloane Stephens and second seed Jessica Pegula on the way to reaching the last eight in Eastbourne.

Her opponent has reached round three in four of her six previous Wimbledon appearances, getting to the last 16 on two occasions.

So, it should be a tight game but, cheered on by her home crowd, Raducanu may just have the edge.
