Gael Monfils and Stan Wawrinka lock horns in an eagerly anticipated battle of the veterans for a place in the Wimbledon third round.

One of the more eye-catching ties of day three at SW19 brings a showdown between two popular players turning back the clock in their late 30s.

At 77 years and 37 days, this marks the oldest combined age in a men’s singles match at Wimbledon since Rod Laver met Bob Howe in 1971.

Three-time major champion Wawrinka is a two-time quarter-finalist at the All England Club, where he is making his 18th appearance.

That is five more than two-time Grand Slam semi-finalist Monfils, who reached the fourth round here six years ago.

A showdown with either 10th seed Grigor Dimitrov or teenager Shang Juncheng awaits the winner of this contest in the third round.

The match gets under way at around 7.30pm BST on Wednesday and will be contested over the best of five sets on No.2 Court.

Though he has not made a significant impact on the ATP Tour this season, Wawrinka did beat Andy Murray in straight sets at the French Open a few weeks back.

The 39-year-old Swiss is aiming to reach round three here for the second year running, and began his campaign with another three-sets victory over a British opponent in Charles Broom.

Meanwhile, Monfils defeated 22nd seed and compatriot Adrian Mannarino in four sets, to continue his impressive grass-court season.

The 37-year-old was a semi-finalist in Mallorca last time out – matching his run to the same stage in Doha – while he defeated Hubert Hurkacz and Cameron Norrie to reach the Indian Wells Open last 16.

Those positive results and greater ATP match sharpness levels may just give him the edge in this one.
