Iga Swiatek commences her latest quest for a first title in over a year when she takes on Polina Kudermetova in the first round at Wimbledon.

The five-time major champion’s mission to secure her long-awaited return to the winner’s circle starts against debutant Kudermetova on Tuesday.

Swiatek has generally struggled on grass throughout her career, only reaching one quarter-final in her five previous appearances at Wimbledon.

However, the Pole enjoyed a timely upturn in fortunes in Bad Homburg last time out, reaching her first surface final before losing out to Jessica Pegula.

That will give her momentum to build on ahead of facing a player about to make her SW19 bow in Kudermetova.

The 22-year-old made a strong start to the season, reaching the Brisbane International final, though she subsequently struggled to kick on from there.

A showdown with either Jodie Burrage or Caty McNally awaits the winner of this clash in the second round.

The match gets under way at around 4pm BST on Tuesday and will be contested over the best of three sets on No.2 Court.

Swiatek’s recent dip in performance levels has seen her surrender top spot in the WTA rankings, and subsequently slip to eighth.

Therefore, her run in Bad Homburg will have been welcome, while also offering her reassurance on grass.

Kudermetova, meanwhile, arrives off the back of six straight defeats, including to her sister Veronika at s’Hertogenbosch last time out.

In fact, she has won just three WTA matches since that run in Brisbane, so claiming the scalp of Swiatek here is a big ask.
