Jannik Sinner goes head to head with fellow Italian Matteo Berrettini in a mouth-watering second-round battle at Wimbledon.

One of the standout ties of the second round at SW19 pits the new world number one against the 2021 finalist on Centre Court.

Both players came through four-set opening-round ties, with Sinner seeing off Yannick Hanfmann and Berrettini beating Marton Fucsovics.

Australian Open champion Sinner is seeking his fifth silverware of the season, having also triumphed in Rotterdam, Miami and Halle so far in 2024.

Berrettini, who was runner-up to Novak Djokovic here three years ago, is also among the campaign’s title winners after his success in Marrekech, while he also reached the final at the recent Stuttgart Open.

Back up to 59th in ATP rankings following an injury-hit couple of years, he will hope to continue making strides at the All England Club.

The winner of this contest will play either Tallon Griekspoor or Miomir Kecmanovic in the third round.

The match gets under way at around 6.30pm BST on Wednesday and will be contested over the best of five sets on Centre Court.

One thing is for certain: Sinner will have his work cut out. This is a tough one to call.

The top seed is up against a player who has won four of his eight ATP titles on grass, while reaching round four in his last three Wimbledon appearances.

It is also worth noting Berrettini defeated the seeded Alexander Zverev and Alex de Minaur in straight sets 12 months ago, before losing to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in the last 16.

But then you have Sinner fresh from winning his maiden tour-level crown on grass in Halle, while he has reached at least the quarter-finals in all eight events he has entered this season.

Who will prevail? The world number one, or the grass-court specialist? This could go right down to the wire.

This will only be the second meeting between the players on the ATP Tour. The sole previous encounter saw Sinner prevail a straight-sets winner at last year’s National Bank Open.
