A first-time Wimbledon champion will be crowned on Saturday as Jasmine Paolini and Barbora Krejcikova go head to head on Centre Court.

For the seventh successive year, a new name will be carved onto the Venus Rosewater dish. But will it be the first of an Italian woman, or that of a fifth Czech-born woman?

Both players came from behind to prevail in three-set semi-finals, and are now just one win away from glory.

Paolini has already made history as the first Italian woman to reach the Wimbledon final, she now looks to become the first major winner from her nation since Flavia Pennetta at the 2015 US Open.

The seventh seed had never previously won a main-draw match in her six previous appearances at SW19, but is now appearing in successive major finals following her run to last month’s French Open showpiece.

She is the first player ranked outside the WTA’s top five to achieve the feat.

Meanwhile, Krejcikova is aiming to deliver back-to-back Wimbledon women’s singles titles for Czechia following Marketa Vondrousova’s success 12 months ago.

It has been an impressive upturn in fortunes for the former Roland Garros champion, who had won just three matches in five months prior to this fortnight having struggled with a back injury.

Only compatriot Karolina Pliskova (18) has made more Grand Slam main-draw appearances between reaching their first two finals (13).

Will it be a first grand slam singles title for Paolini, or a first in three years for Krejcikova?

The match gets under way at 2pm BST on Saturday and will be contested over the best of three sets on Centre Court.

With both players looking to add their name to the Venus Rosewater dish for the first time, we can expect a tightly fought contest here.

Paolini had only won four of her 20 grand slam matches prior to this year, but now has the most such victories in 2024 with 15.

Although, the Italian has only won two of her seven previous WTA finals, with Krejcikova prevailing in six of her nine since the start of the 2021 French Open.

The Czech has beaten two major champions – Jelena Ostapenko and Elena Rybakina – to reach her first singles final at SW19, where she has already tasted success twice in the doubles event (2018 and 2022).

That previous experience of winning here may just tilt the contest in her favour.
