Jasmine Paolini and Donna Vekic go head to head on Thursday aiming to secure the first place in this year’s Wimbledon final.

Two in-form players lock horns on Centre Court, having already made national history by making it this far at SW19.

Paolini is the first Italian to reach the women’s semi-finals at Wimbledon, while Vekic is the first Croatian player to achieve the feat this century.

Runner-up at last month’s French Open, Paolini has built on that momentum this fortnight. The seventh seed has dropped just a single set while defeating the likes of Bianca Andreescu, Madison Keys and Emma Navarro, taking her WTA-leading major match win tally for the year to 14.

Meanwhile, Vekic has overcome the likes of 28th seed Dayana Yastremska and former world number two Paula Badosa to reach her maiden semi-final at a slam.

The Croatian, who has contemplated retirement due to persistent injuries in recent years, boasts a tour-leading 10 match wins on surface in 2024, having also reached the final in Bad Homburg during an impressive grass-court season.

The winner of this clash will play either Elena Rybakina or Barbora Krejcikova in Saturday’s final.

The match gets under way at around 1.30pm BST on Thursday and will be contested over the best of three sets on Centre Court.

Roland Garros finalist Paolini arrived at Wimbledon having never previously won a main-draw match at the grass-court major.

Fast forward a fortnight and the 28-year-old is the oldest player to reach her first two major semi-finals during the same season since Betty Stove in 1977.

She now looks to become the first woman since Serena Williams in 2016 to reach the French Open and Wimbledon final in the same year.

Meanwhile, Vekic is only the third Croatian woman to reach a major semi-final after Iva Majoli and Miriana Lucic.

Achieving the feat in her 43rd slam, only four players have appeared in more before reaching their maiden semi-final.

The fact that Paolini has already been there – and so recently, too – may just swing this contest in her favour.
