Jannik Sinner begins his mission to land a maiden Wimbledon title against compatriot Luca Nardi at the All England Club on Tuesday.

The world number one has reached at least the quarter-finals in each of the last three years at SW19, but will now look to go the extra steps and add to his silverware collection.

Sinner has already triumphed at the Australian Open in a season that stalled for two months while he served a doping ban, but marked his return to action with back-to-back final appearances at the Italian and French Open.

The Italian’s string of appearances in championship matches ended in Halle earlier this month, though that means he will be fresher in his quest for a fourth major title.

Nardi suffered a straight-sets defeat to Tomas Etcheverry on debut at the grass-court major last year, and will hope to give a better account of himself 12 months on.

An ATP quarter-finalist in Dubai earlier this month, the 21-year-old was also runner-up at a Challenger Tour event in Koblenz.

A showdown with either Aleksandar Vukic or Tseng Chun-hsin awaits the winner of this clash in the second round.

The match gets under way at 1pm BST on Tuesday and will be contested over the best of five sets on No.1 Court.

It is hard to see any outcome prevailing other than a commanding victory for Sinner.

The top seed has gone 15 successive major events since losing in round one, having done so at Wimbledon four years ago.

Compatriot Nardi is making only his sixth appearance at a slam, while seeking his first such match win.

Doing so against the world number one is certainly the tallest of orders.
