Aryna Sabalenka aims to remain on course for the Berlin Tennis Open title against Marketa Vondrousova in the semi-finals on Saturday.

A battle of the grand slam winners comprises the first of the last-four clashes in the German capital.

Sabalenka is targeting her fourth title of the season, having already triumphed in Brisbane, Miami and Madrid.

After beating Rebeka Masarova in straight sets in her opening match, the world number one was given a scare during her quarter-final clash with Elena Rybakina.

Sabalenka trailed 6-2 in the third-set tie-break, but reeled off six successive points to scrape over the line.

Meanwhile, only appearing in the draw via her protected ranking, Vondrousova has certainly made the most of her opportunity.

The former Wimbledon champion defeated Australian Open winner Madison Keys in straight sets, before edging out world number 12 Diana Shnaider and seeing off Ons Jabeur 6-4, 6-1 in what was a repeat of the 2023 championship match at SW19.

A showdown with either Liudmila Samsonova or Wang Xinyu awaits the winner in Sunday’s final.

The match gets under way at 11am BST on Saturday and will be contested over the best of three sets at Steffi Graf Stadion.

Vondrousova is enjoying a welcome return to the business end of WTA tournaments.

Indeed, this is her first semi-final in 14 months, and is now seeking her first final appearance since that fairy-tale Wimbledon triumph.

However, she faces a player who has prevailed in all seven of her previous semi-finals this season.

The fact Sabalenka was taken the distance by Rybakina suggests this could also go the distance, though you would expect her to just have the edge.
