Heather Watson

Watson is a counter-punching baseliner rather than a power player. She takes the ball early, moves well laterally and relies on depth and consistency to draw errors instead of hitting through opponents, which is why her best results have come on faster courts where the ball comes onto the racquet. The serve is a modest weapon by tour standards, so her matches tend to be decided on return games and on how long she can sustain the physical level, and the deciding sets she has won across her career say a good deal about the second of those.

Watson has spent the back half of her career ranked outside the level her name suggests, which tends to make her a shorter price than her ranking justifies in qualifying draws and a longer one in main draws. The useful read is surface and format: she is a materially better proposition on hard courts and grass than on clay, and in three-set matches where her fitness matters more than raw power.
