Playing Style & Strengths
Tien is a counter-puncher who wins through retrieval and fitness rather than power, which makes him unusual among the current American men. The forehand has a long windup that produces height and heavy topspin; the two-handed backhand is flatter and difficult to attack, and because he is left-handed that shape arrives in places right-handers are not used to defending. He extends rallies deliberately and lets the physical cost accumulate.
The evidence is in the length of his wins. He beat Medvedev over four hours and fifty minutes in a five-setter at the 2025 Australian Open that finished close to 3am, then beat him again in straight sets a year later, taking a 6-0 set off a former US Open champion for the first time at a major. He leads that head-to-head 2-0. Runs at Indian Wells and Rome in 2026 followed the same pattern of grinding through seeded opposition.
The serve is the clear limitation. It sits in the 100 to 115mph range without much variation in placement, so he generates few free points and has to earn most of what he wins, and under Chang the work has gone into approaching the net and finishing in the forecourt to shorten points he currently plays out.

Tien Betting Tips & Predictions
Tien is a live underdog against ranked opposition and the reason is repeatable rather than lucky. A counter-punching lefty with elite fitness is a genuinely awkward matchup for big hitters, and his 2026 record against seeds, including Medvedev, Shelton, Tiafoe, Bublik and Tsitsipas, is the pattern to price rather than the exception.
Match length is often the sharper market than the winner. His serve produces few free points, so his matches run long and to more games than the price implies, and total-games and over-sets angles have read better on him than short match prices.
