The temperaments were the same contrast, and the sport has never had a better piece of casting.
The 1980 Wimbledon final is the match everyone knows: Borg won a fifth consecutive title after McEnroe saved five championship points in an 18-16 fourth-set tiebreak. McEnroe won the rematch at the US Open that year, and again at Wimbledon in 1981. Borg retired in January 1983 at 26, which is why a rivalry that should have run a decade stopped at 14 matches.
