Denis Shapovalov
Denis Shapovalov is the Canadian left-hander whose one-handed backhand made him one of the most watchable players of his generation. A former world No. 10 and a Wimbledon semi-finalist in 2021, he broke through as a teenager by beating Rafael Nadal in Montreal in 2017 and has since won four ATP titles, three of them indoors. Injury and inconsistency have kept him from the very top for stretches, but at the 2026 US Open he came through his opening match against Miomir Kecmanović 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 and meets Luca Van Assche in the second round.

Playing Style & Strengths
Shapovalov plays a high-risk, high-reward game built on a huge left-handed serve and a one-handed backhand he hits flat and early. When the timing is there he takes the ball on the rise and ends points in three shots; when it is not, the unforced error count climbs quickly. The lefty serve out wide on the ad court is his most reliable weapon, and indoor hard courts, where the bounce is predictable and the conditions do not slow his flat ball, have produced three of his four titles.
