Venus Williams continues her quest for a second ASB Classic title on Friday when she takes on Canadian teenager, Bianca Andreescu in the quarter finals.

Williams is seeking her first WTA title in almost three years, with her last triumph coming in Kaohsiung in February 2016, when she defeated Japan's Misaki Doi.

She came very close to ending that drought in a superb 2017, when she contested Grand Slam finals in Australia and Wimbledon, as well as the championship match at the WTA Finals in Singapore, but she fell short in all three big finals. Venus went on to end that season inside the top five, her best finish since 2010.

The American great however struggled to get anywhere that level in 2018, with injuries and loss of form getting in her way. She was 4-4 in Grand Slam matches, and played just 11 tournaments, with her best results being a semi-final at Indian Wells and quarter finals in Miami and San Jose. She ended her season after a third-round loss to Serena Williams at the US Open.

Refreshed from her time-off and the off-season, Williams has made an eye-catching start to 2019, beating Serena 4-6 6-3 10-8 at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship, an exhibition match in Abu Dhabi, and then scoring two high-quality wins over Victoria Azarenka and Lauren Davies in Auckland. She recovered from a second set blowout to beat Azarenka 6-3 1-6 6-3 in the first round before powering to a 6-4 6-3 victory over fellow American and 2017 Auckland champion, Davis in the second round.

Serving at 76% and winning over 50% of points on both first and second serves, Venus controlled her match against Davis, breaking three times on the way to victory. The five-time Wimbledon champion got the first break of the match at 3-2, but she lost her serve for the only time in the match while attempting to close out the set, before making up for that with a break in the next game. Williams rode on that momentum early in the second set, breaking for a 2-0 lead, and she didn't encounter any troubles after that, winning after an hour and 33 minutes.

“I think it was even cleaner tennis than the first round, but I'm still searching for perfection, Williams said. "She really can hit the ball".

“I was really happy to have played well against her. I think I served better throughout the whole match more consistently, so I think that helped me a lot today to close it out."

Venus' victory over Davis confirmed one half of a projected quarter final against Caroline Wozniacki, but the second half never materialized, as top seed Wozniacki was stunned by the brilliant Bianca Andreescu later in the day.

18-year-old Andreescu produced arguably most accomplished performances of her young career to score a superb 6-4 6-4 victory over world No. 3 Wozniacki, registering her first over a player ranked inside the top ten.

Without being reckless, Andreescu was positive against Wozniacki, stepping into the court and moving forward whenever she could, while she also mixed things up nicely with clever drop shots. Two-time finalist, Wozniacki fought from a break down in both sets, but her younger adversary remained undaunted, winning the final two games in each set to advance to her second WTA quarter final. She had reached the last eight at a tour-level meet for the first time in Washington in 2017, when she beat Camila Giorgi and Kristina Mladenovic for her first WTA main draw wins, before falling to Andrea Petkovic.

"I've pictured myself beating top players like this, and it's really just a dream come true. I know I have the level. [My confidence] skyrocketed like 20 times today. She was No.1 in the world and won a Grand Slam," the Canadian said after her victory over Wozniacki.

Andreescu did not immediately kick on from that 2017 Washington breakthrough, as she spent virtually all of 2018 on the ITF pro-circuit, and failed to make any tour-level main draw. She lost in the qualifying rounds of all four Grand Slams.

Is this the year when she pushes up to the next level, and finally break into the top 100?

The start has been good, with the Canadian coming through Auckland qualifying, beating Kristina Kucova, Jamie Fourlis and Laura Siegemund, before taking out Timea Babos and Wozniacki in the main draw.

She faces another huge test on Friday, as she confronts seven-time major winner, Venus Williams, who herself has been playing some really good tennis in Auckland.

"I'm just going to go out there like I did today with nothing to lose, just going for my shots and also being patient and aggressive, and have fun. That's the most important thing’, Andreescu said.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Venus Williams doesn't know much about her next opponent.

"I know nothing [about Andreescu]. I have to be able to get out there and do what I do, but it would be nice to see her play a little".

She would have found out a lot more about Andreescu within the last day, and will be well aware of the threat posed by the world No. 152, who will look to move the American around as much as possible, and go for her shots when she gets the chance.

Venus has definitely found a decent level early in the season, and if she maintains the standards she set against Azarenka and Davis, the 38-year-old should have too much in her arsenal for the Canadian youngster.
