Diana Shnaider Wins the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo for Her Sixth Title

Diana Shnaider won the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo on Sunday, beating Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 in two hours and 18 minutes. The No. 3 seed led by a set and 4-0 before Fernandez won seven of the next eight games to force a decider. It is Shnaider’s first title of 2026 and the sixth of her career.

Six Finals in a Row

Shnaider saved three break points to level the third set at 1-1, then broke in the fifth game and won the next three games. She has now won six WTA finals in a row: her only defeat in one came in her first, at Ningbo in 2023. Tokyo is her third WTA 500 title and the fourth of her six on hard courts. She had lost all four semi-finals she reached earlier this season, and the title is projected to lift her back to her career-high ranking of No. 11.

Her Route to the Title

Round Opponent Score
Second round Aliaksandra Sasnovich (Q) 6-3, 5-7, 6-3
Quarter-finals Alexandra Eala (8) 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-4
Semi-finals Mia Pohanková (WC) 6-4, 7-6(7)
Final Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 5-7, 6-2

As the No. 3 seed she had a first-round bye. Her quarter-final against Eala lasted two hours and 52 minutes, a week after she had beaten her in Ningbo too, and she saved a set point in the second set of her semi-final against the Slovak wildcard Mia Pohanková.

Fernandez Loses a Second Final in a Week

Fernandez, unseeded, beat Himeno Sakatsume and the No. 5 seed Elise Mertens, then went through to the semi-finals when the top seed Elena Rybakina withdrew from their quarter-final with a neck injury. She beat Kamilla Rakhimova 7-5, 6-3 to reach a second final in successive weeks, after losing to Rybakina in Ningbo. It was only her fifth defeat in 21 matches, a run that includes her sixth career title, in Singapore. Shnaider has won their last four meetings, three of them this season.

What Comes Next

Neither finalist is in the eight-player field for the WTA Finals in Indian Wells from 8 to 15 November. Shnaider called the title a great finish to her season.
