Alex Eala
Alex Eala is the most significant player the Philippines has produced, and at 21 she already owns a list of national firsts. The left-hander is ranked World No. 28, a career high reached after Wimbledon 2026, which made her the first Filipina inside the WTA top 30. She was also the first to reach a WTA tour-level final in the Open Era, at Eastbourne in 2025.
Two weeks define her so far. At the 2025 Miami Open she reached the semi-finals as a wildcard ranked No. 140, beating Jelena Ostapenko, Madison Keys and Iga Świątek in straight sets, the first wildcard in tournament history to beat three Grand Slam champions that way. At Wimbledon 2026 she beat Świątek again, 7-6(9), 6-2 on Centre Court, to become the first Filipina in the second week of a major.

Playing Style & Strengths
Eala is a left-handed baseline aggressor trained in the Rafa Nadal Academy mould, and the handedness shapes every pattern she plays. Heavy topspin off the forehand kicks into the backhand corner of right-handers, producing cross-court angles most opponents rarely have to deal with, and the serve works through placement and a wide slice from the ad court rather than through pace. The two-handed backhand is flatter and more compact, used to redirect and change direction instead of to overpower.
Her record is concentrated on hard courts and grass. The Miami semi-final, the Eastbourne final and the Wimbledon fourth round all came on those surfaces, while Roland-Garros has yet to produce a main-draw win in two attempts. Court coverage is a genuine strength, and she is at her most dangerous when rallies extend and she can prove a point rather than end it early.
