Sorana Cirstea
Sorana Cirstea is having the best season of a twenty-year career at the age of 36, and it is her last. She announced in December 2025 that 2026 would be her final season, then went out and reached a career-high World No. 17 with 2,502 points, becoming the oldest woman to break into the WTA top 20 for the first time.
The season has produced the two biggest results of her career. At Rome she beat world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 for her first win over a reigning No. 1 and reached a first semi-final there. At Roland-Garros she reached the quarter-finals, matching the career-best she set at the same tournament in 2009, seventeen years apart. She also won her home title in Cluj-Napoca, beating Emma Raducanu 6-0, 6-2 in the final.

Playing Style & Strengths
Cirstea is an aggressive baseliner who plays from inside the court, and the forehand is the shot everything is built around: a semi-western grip, heavy topspin, and enough depth to push opponents back before she redirects down the line or opens the court crosscourt. The two-handed backhand is the supporting shot and its value is variety, moving between a defensive slice and a flat redirection to break up rhythm.
The serve is still a real weapon at 36, averaging around 3.5 aces a match and aimed at wide angles to draw the short ball she wants to attack. What has changed in 2026 is not the game but the results it produces: beating a reigning world No. 1 for the first time, reaching a first Rome semi-final, and going through Roland-Garros with a 6-0, 6-2 win in the third round.
The physical question that usually settles late-career seasons has not arrived. She won three-set matches against Sabalenka and came within a match point of beating the eventual Wimbledon champion, which is not the profile of a player being carried by a draw. Hard courts and clay have produced her two breakthrough results this year, while grass has given her a third round six times and never more.
Cirstea Betting Tips & Predictions
Cirstea is priced by age and by a ranking the market has been slow to trust, and 2026 has repeatedly shown that to be wrong. She beat a reigning world No. 1 as an outsider, reached a Rome semi-final and a Roland-Garros quarter-final, and has around 24 career top-10 wins, so treating her as a routine underdog against seeded opposition has not paid.
Two things to weigh. Grass is her weakest surface, with six third rounds and no better in twenty years of trying, and this is her announced final season, so motivation and scheduling are less predictable than for a player defending a ranking.
