Former junior World No. 1 Taylor Townsend made a victorious slam debut on Monday at Roland Garros.

Although Serena and Venus Williams have represented American tennis superbly in recent years, many are wondering who the next great female player from the United States will be. The nation's hottest prospect appears to be Townsend, who is currently making great strides at the top level. The 18-year-old took her latest step on Monday with a 7-5, 6-1 triumph over her compatriot Vania King. The contest marked Townsend's first main draw appearance at a slam.

"It was awesome. I mean, I had so much fun," said Townsend after clinching the win. "I was really nervous at first, but I tried to fight every single point. Every ball that came on my side, I just tried to get it back, and worked on being positive the whole time."

"I just kept trying to focus on every single ball that came on my side and just get it back and just do what I knew I could do, just loosen up. It was a lot of fun. Really exciting. It was a huge moment for me, and I kind of took it really well. After I settled down, it was great."

Another big experience awaits Townsend in round two as she'll face French No. 1 Alize Cornet. It's probable that the match will be played on either Court Philippe Chatrier or Court Suzanne Lenglen. Townsend isn't expecting the crowd to give her much backing but seems excited about the chance to compete on one of the greatest arenas in tennis.

"I'm excited," she said. "But, I don't know how it is when they're all cheering against you, so…Obviously it's going to be a tough match. I'm looking forward to it. I think that I'm playing really well and I'm in a good place right now. I'm looking forward to it. I think it'll be great."

Townsend seems to be remarkably relaxed and positive about her current situation, which is perhaps to be expected given that many think she'll be a title contender at the slams in years to come. The American is happy about her progress so far but is also keen to extend her run in Paris and achieve headline-grabbing results.

"This is a huge opportunity for me," she replied when asked what it's like to finally be competing in the main draw of a slam. "At the same time, like I said, this is what I've been working for, so I hope to have many more not only first rounds, but many more rounds. It's great that I won my first round, but the tournament is not over and I'm not satisfied. I want to continue to press forward and do the best I can in this tournament."
