Daniil Medvedev kept his Almaty Open title on Sunday, coming from a set down to beat the qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-7(6), 6-1, 6-3. It is the first time in his career that he has successfully defended a title, at the fourth attempt, and it is his 25th tour-level title and his fourth of 2026.
A First Title Defence
Medvedev had lost all three of his previous finals as a defending champion. In Almaty he lost a first-set tie-break in which he had a set point, then took control of the second set and served well in the third. “It is just a matter of time, luck, a moment,” he said of finally defending a title. The win also lifts him to fifth in the Race to Turin.
