Monte Carlo Masters 2026 Semi-Final Preview | Sinner vs Zverev, Alcaraz vs Vacherot & Saturday Predictions
The Monte Carlo Masters 2026 semi-finals are set for Saturday 11 April, with world No 2 Jannik Sinner facing Alexander Zverev in a first-ever clay-court meeting, and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz taking on the tournament’s fairy tale, wildcard Valentin Vacherot. After a week that has produced 11 seed casualties, two historic milestones and the emergence of Joao Fonseca, the final four is headlined by the top three seeds and a player who started the week ranked outside the top 60.
UPDATE (12 April): Sinner beat Zverev 6-1, 6-4 and Alcaraz beat Vacherot 6-4, 6-4 in the semi-finals. Sinner then defeated Alcaraz 7-6(5), 6-3 in the final to win the title and reclaim world No 1. Read the full final report.

| Match | Est. Time (BST) | Court |

Sinner [2] vs Zverev [3]
The headline semi-final and the one with the most at stake. Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev have met 10 times on the ATP Tour, but never on clay. Their head-to-head record stands at 5-5, making this one of the most evenly matched rivalries in the current game.
Sinner’s Path Here
The Italian has been the most impressive player at the tournament. He opened with a 6-3, 6-0 demolition of Humbert, survived Machac 6-1, 6-7(3), 6-3 in the round of 16, and then beat FAA [6] 6-3, 6-4 in the quarter-finals to extend his consecutive Masters 1000 win streak to 20, matching Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal as the only players to achieve that mark since 1990.
Sinner’s clay transition has been seamless. Nine days after completing the Sunshine Double, he has dropped just one set in three matches here. The rankings race adds an extra dimension: with Alcaraz defending 1,000 points from last year’s title, every round Sinner wins without Alcaraz doing the same closes the gap at the top. See our Alcaraz vs Sinner H2H for the full rivalry record.
Zverev’s Path Here
Zverev has improved steadily through the week. He wobbled badly in his opener against Garin (4-6, 6-4, 7-5) but has looked increasingly comfortable since, beating Bergs 6-2, 7-5 and then ending Fonseca’s dream run 7-5, 6-7(3), 6-3 in an absorbing quarter-final. The German’s serve and physicality troubled Fonseca in the first and third sets, and he will need that same level against Sinner.
We noted in the draw analysis that Monte Carlo has historically been Zverev’s weakest clay Masters. Two semi-finals in nine previous appearances is a modest record. But his level in the Fonseca match suggested something has clicked this week, and a first clay meeting with Sinner is exactly the kind of match that could raise his game further. See our Alcaraz vs Zverev H2H for context on how Zverev matches up against the other top seed should he progress.
Key Matchup Factors
| Factor | Sinner | Zverev |
| H2H | 5-5 (never on clay) | 5-5 (never on clay) |
| Sets dropped this week | 1 (Machac R16) | 3 (Garin R32, Fonseca QF) |
| MC career record | 2x semi-finalist | 2x semi-finalist |
| Current streak | 20 consecutive Masters wins | 5-match MC win streak |
| Clay form 2026 | First clay event of season | Improved through the week |
Prediction: Sinner in three sets. Zverev’s serve will keep him competitive and he should take a set, but Sinner’s ability to raise his level in big moments has been the defining feature of his 2026 season. The Italian has looked more comfortable with each match, and his record in tight moments against top-five opponents this year is outstanding. Sinner reaches his first Monte Carlo final.
Alcaraz [1] vs Vacherot (WC)
The fairy tale meets the favourite. Carlos Alcaraz, the defending champion who just recorded his 300th career win, faces Valentin Vacherot, a Monegasque wildcard who has become the story of the tournament and arguably the story of the clay season so far.
Alcaraz’s Path Here
The Spaniard has been devastatingly efficient. After beating Baez 6-1, 6-3 in his opener, he dropped a set to Etcheverry (6-1, 4-6, 6-3) in the R16 before demolishing Bublik [8] 6-3, 6-0 in the quarter-finals. That Bublik match was Alcaraz at his absolute best, dropping just three games in a match that doubles as his 300th career ATP victory.
Alcaraz defends 1,000 points from his 2025 title. Winning the tournament would maintain his No 1 ranking; anything less than the final opens the door for Sinner. The pressure has not visibly affected him so far.
Vacherot’s Path Here
It is difficult to overstate how remarkable Vacherot’s run has been. The Monegasque, ranked outside the top 60 at the start of the week, has beaten:
- Lorenzo Musetti [4], last year’s finalist, 7-6(6), 7-5
- Hubert Hurkacz 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-4
- Alex de Minaur [5] 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, saving 13 break points
He is the first Monegasque player to reach a semi-final at the Monte Carlo Masters in the Open Era, and the result has propelled him into the top 20 for the first time. The home crowd will be electric on Saturday.
Prediction: Alcaraz in straight sets, but it will be closer than the scoreline suggests. Vacherot will have moments, the crowd will be incredible, and Alcaraz may need to weather an early storm. But the gap in quality between the world No 1 and a player making his first Masters semi-final is ultimately too large to bridge over three sets. Alcaraz reaches the final and keeps his title defence on track.
Projected Final
| Stage | Most Likely Matchup | Notes |
| Final (Sunday) | Alcaraz vs Sinner | The draw has delivered. Full H2H record. First clay meeting since RG 2024. 1,000 ranking points at stake |
If both top seeds come through as expected, Sunday’s final will be the biggest match of the clay season so far, with direct implications for the No 1 ranking heading into Madrid, Rome and Roland Garros.
