Jessica Pegula is the only player to have defended the women’s title in recent years, winning in 2023 and 2024. Victoria Mboko’s 2025 win as a Canadian teenager was the story of the tournament.

Shelton returns to defend the men’s title, and does so in a draw that has opened up considerably with the top three all absent from Montreal. Mboko is out with a knee injury and will not defend in Toronto, leaving the women’s field, which is close to full strength, without its holder.
