The bottom half of the Wimbledon draw settles its semi-final places today, and it comes with a home story: British wildcard Arthur Fery is the first wildcard in a men’s quarter-final at the All England Club since 2014 after stunning Grigor Dimitrov, and he takes Centre Court against Italy’s Flavio Cobolli. On No.1 Court, second seed Alexander Zverev meets Taylor Fritz in the day’s heavyweight clash, while the women’s draw resolves its second semi-finalist through Marta Kostyuk, Jasmine Paolini, Linda Noskova and Elise Mertens.

Cobolli v Fery — the Centre Court fairytale
Fery has been the story of the fortnight, riding grass-court belief and a partisan Centre Court to a place no British wildcard has reached in over a decade. But Cobolli is the more complete grass-court operator this summer, with a heavier serve and cleaner returns off both wings, and the step up in occasion has undone bigger names than Fery before. Expect the Italian to control the baseline exchanges — but not without the crowd dragging Fery to at least one set.

Zverev v Fritz — the pick of the day
Two of the biggest servers left in the draw, and the numbers on grass tilt Fritz’s way: the American has the stronger grass-court résumé, thrives on quick courts, and returns just well enough to nick the tiebreaks that decide matches like this. Zverev remains a step below his hard-court self on grass. With this little between them on serve, games should pile up.

Paolini v Kostyuk — experience on the big stage
Kostyuk hits a heavy, flat ball that can overwhelm anyone on her day, but Paolini has been here before — a Wimbledon finalist in 2024 — and her movement and composure in the biggest moments give her the edge in a tight one. In the other women’s QF, Mertens’ grass craft makes her a live underdog against the ballstriking of Noskova.
