Week 1 Acca: Four Legs from Toronto
All four matches are taken from the official WTA order of play for Wednesday 5 August. Times are Eastern.
Leg 1 — Elena Rybakina to beat Daria Kasatkina
Centre Court, from 12:30pm. The No. 2 seed against an unseeded opponent is the safest anchor on the card. Rybakina’s serve travels on a quick hard court, and this is the sort of opener a top seed is expected to come through without drama.
Leg 2 — Jessica Pegula to beat Magdalena Frech
Grandstand. Pegula is the No. 3 seed and a North American hard-court regular; Frech has the game to extend a set but rarely the weapons to win two against this level of opponent.
Leg 3 — Coco Gauff to beat Kayla Day
Centre Court, following Rybakina. The No. 4 seed against a qualifier, in front of a crowd that will be firmly behind the bigger name. Straightforward on paper, and the shortest leg in the slip.
Leg 4 — Naomi Osaka to beat Panna Udvardy
Grandstand, not before 5:00pm. The value leg. Osaka is seeded 11 here and hard courts remain where she is most dangerous; Udvardy is a tricky, low-error opponent rather than a threatening one. Slightly more risk than the three above, which is the point of including it.
